Goodbye Video Tapes!

Goodbye Video Tapes!

That’s right, I’m FINALLY, finally, finally done with video tapes now that I have my shiny new digital video recorder with dvd burner. I hereby give notice to the world that his majesty, the King of Video Taping (and Muskrat Wrangling) is giving up his throne to anyone that wants it. Yes, I heard you Tivo with your timely and well done funeral for the old & decrepit VCR. I ‘m agreeing with your every word, industry speculators with your tremendous insight into the here and now! I’ve been listening to your every word, smarty-pants technology reporters! I bow to the wisdom of all those people that have been telling us for YEARS that it was finally time to take ole Yeller the VCR out back, bonk him in the head with a shovel and roll him into his new home - a shallow grave with a warm, light earth blanket (don’t worry kids, Ole Yeller’s new digs are rent controlled.) Especially now as a new DVR owner, I have no choice but to admit that you guys are right. I’ve seen the light and agree…

…that you’re all morons. Seriously, why would you constantly announce to the world in such an obvious manner how stupid you all are? On purpose. There’s no way all you “the VCR is Dead” crowers are accidently killing your images by saying statements that are so obviously wrong like “fire is cold,” “ice is hot” and “Demi Moore has an acting career.” There’s only one way to kill the VCR and that is to jump back in time and off everyone that went to develop one. Not that in a few years as time travel becomes commonplace that won’t be an option, but as everyone knows you’ll really get into trouble with the Temporal Police and who wants to pay that fine (they rip off your gonads. Slowly. With feeling. And if you don’t have gonads they give them to you just so they can rip ‘em off. Slowly. With feeling.)

The VCR’s death has been greatly exaggerated. Likewise the demise of video tape. Despite all the reports, speculation on industry trends and propaganda to the masses by companies selling *gasp* things other than VCRs (Hello TiVo) the VCR and video tape are alive and well. Sitting and laughing in comfy chairs, too. They’ll be around practically forever. Take the record player, for a shining example of how instantly wrong people are who say a new technology will make an old device dead. Are record players dead? Vinyl? Records? No? Hmmm. Are audio tapes dead? No? Ovens? Books? Pencils? People who can think? (Ok the jury’s out on that one.) Seriously guys, it’s time to stop huffing your own words along with the tailpipe of that ‘74 caddy. The VCR and video tape will be here longer than you will. Especially if you keep yapping when I’m trying to listen to my new iPod…

For me, now that I have my new recorder, the VCR is used to play back all that stuff I have on tape. See… even if all of our VCRs were instantly replaced with keener and newer digital recorders (and we off everyone that tries to create a VCR despite that whole gonad ripped off penalty) we still have to play all that stuff we have on video tape. DUH! Well, unless while the magical VCR is Dead Faerie is busy replacing all our VCRs with DVRs she converts all our tapes to DVDs. Not that I think that’s bloody likely as the good peeps over at DL.TV can tell you - doing all that converting is a real %^&$#@ing nightmare! An MPEG-4 conversion wasn’t built in a day, you know. Besides the VCR is Dead Faerie is a union employee and you all know what that means… (her lunch breaks are longer than her freaking work day!)

Relax peeps, the VCR isn’t going the way of the dodo bird. The pundits don’t have a large enough anti-reality meteor…

Give them time Vinnie, give them time. One day the anti-reality meteor will come crashing down on us all. However, wasn't video supposed to kill radio? Yet Radio is still there. :)

Radio is not here. It is only used by parents to showcase their children banging on cookware and adults that refuse to podcast
Videotape is excellent for wrapping gifts

Shannon: I just wish the world would end so all the people yammering that it'd happen would shadduop. Wait a sec... uh... nevermind... hehe, it's getting dark. Is there a storm coming?

Radio shack is alive and well gweep what are you talking about. As to video tape uses, old video tape is nutritional if taken into the right orifice.

Does the Radio Shack DVR have the variable record speed? EP. SP, , , XP
March 1, 2006 @ 04:48PM
It has 6 recording speeds. I use the next to the highest quality setting to save 2hrs of video on DVDs. Right now it's $250 after a $50 rebate. :-) Daddy likies. And with an 80gig HD too. I practically trade the $50 rebate for the 2yr extended warranty ($40) since if it goes bad w/in that time I get a better recorder (they won't have that one anymore). Score...

Well Vinnie it seems that the (model) girlfriend was just a mail order bride from (Nigeria) Africa. Then another girl popped up after I dropped the Nigerian bride, and said she was in London. Oh, and get this from the London girl, "I can't be with you if you don't have a job to support me." Sheesh, you would think this girl wouldn't care, but I guess she does.

Anyway, I'm on girl number 3 (Her story is that she's a jeweler who's flying to Nigeria. Oh and she says she has a child. We'll see how long this one lasts huh?). I'm beginning to get jaded on these online romances (No offence to you Kevin and Darci). :(
March 3, 2006 @ 06:34AM
Shannon: *gasp* if ever there was an incentive to have a job then supporting a stranger is certainly it. So far the women you're listing sound almost like a cross between an online dating service and all those mail order scams. Perhaps someone is running both and his server gacked?

Maybe Vinnie. I'm beginning to wonder if there aren't a few guys pretending to be women. That or these are Russian women pretending to be something so I will be interested in them, i.e. Internet brides. Now if one of these internet girls is real, I will be happy.

And you know Vinnie if I could work to support a future girlfriend, you know I would. My disabilities don't allow me to do manual labor day in and day out.
March 3, 2006 @ 04:13PM
Ok - look for the adam's apple . Unless they have surgery to shave it, that's a dude you're looking at. And don't worry about manual labor, it's a tad over-rated. I'll send you some palm fronds and an instructional manual and you'll be weaving baskets in no time!

BTW a key to understanding what recording speed to use on a digital recorder, since they use compression (ie not record everything) is taping Battlestar Galactica (has lots of fast motion.) Find what mode works good but lets you tape more per disk. Of course after experimenting the 2hr mode is ideal, as expected with any digital recorder so no big shock there...lol

I rarely use a disk. Most of my recording is to the HD
The disk s for from VHS or Beta. SP is best, unless the tape is over 2 hours
March 4, 2006 @ 09:09AM
Gweep: do you use a tuner in your computer?
March 4, 2006 @ 09:32AM
Comment from: gweeptish
No. My DVR has a HD and a Disk recorder. HD is 108 hrs slowest, 36 SP and 18 XP
The disk 6, 2 and 1
For XP I'd need HDTV and better eyes
There were 3 versions of Radio Shack DVR's last time I checked.
Disk only, HD only and Disk and HD
Next computer I'll consider a tuner

Vinnie,

With my experience on these online women, maybe you have a topic for your next blog. However, you'll have to wait for me to put up a blog until May or June of this year. I checked out the urls on godaddy.com, and I like the prices there so far.

No Darci, I have no idea why these women think me attractive, I thought I was ugly. So I don't want you and Kevin ganging up on me in my email now. :D

Vinnie, have you watched the Dvorak pilot on DLTV yet?
March 4, 2006 @ 11:19AM
Gweep: cool, what DVR do you have? I have the Rshack one that has the HD and burner. 96hrs slowest, 16hrs highest qual, 32hrs next highest qual, 48hrs the next next highest. 1/2/3/4/6/fill per DVD. I will check out Dvorak's show (how could I not) later today when I get back from socializing w/my sistas.

Shannon: Get an URL $7max a yr these days, hook up a blog and go for it. As to posting about women on my blog, I don't see the point as they seem to get enough mentions on the internet. My next post will be about fire ants and they're cuddliness...

Panasonic DMR-E80H with 80 gig HD with 4 recording speeds for HD or disk

Cool gweep, I just checked it out.

Gweeptish you and I have the same HD based, set top dvd-r Burner. Sad it only uses DVD-RAM to rewrite with instead of DVD-RW. Or at least mine does Gweeptish. And no Vinnie, mine is not able to go onto the internet and get a frimware upgrade.

I mostly use the HD, and copy to DVD-R if i want to keep it. Have never bought DVD-RAM.
March 4, 2006 @ 10:45PM
Gotcha. Makes sense, I'm doing the same thing. I have a few DVD-RWs for "scratch tapes." If taping stuff I missed I move them onto there until I get them in order then burn them to DVDs so episodes are sequential. I did find a lovely hack site that I can put a larger HD in it but really don't understand putting a larger drive in a unit like ours when you have the burner. D-u-h.

Vinnie likes Battlestar Galactica (the new one on Sci-Fi Channel) huh? That would explain the new HD based DVD recorder, makes it so much easier for you to tape off of cable tv and then later burn off to a dvd-r for storage.

For right now I'm using mine to copy JLU off of my Dish Network PVR onto the set top DVD-R's HD for now until I have a bunch of them. That and I use it to copy and burn Smallville Season 5 on DVD-R.
March 5, 2006 @ 12:43PM
Yes, I do love the new Battlestar Galactica (as well as the old one) and taping to the HD SG-1/ Atlantis/ Galactica rocks. Not that you couldn't do that on the VCR (LP quality is very nice on a VCR that has it), but I do record it in a quality that is better than a tape and spend the extra time editing out all the commercials and saving it to DVD so when a new DVD set comes out of a show I taped that was from the point I bought the digital recorder, I laugh and spend my money on something else. One of the prime good pts of digital recoders is what I just did - taped SNL the other night and saved the tre' funny Natalia Portman rap segment. Then deleted the rest. I'm currently taping Jon Stewart's first Academy Award hosting gig and am eagerly awaiting saving his funny bits for all time :-)
March 5, 2006 @ 06:35PM
Oh and as suggested by Minnietaur I will be dubbing to DVD all my ZDTV appearances :-)

Vinnie,

Are those ZDTV appearances going to go on sale at Ebay? Or should we expect you to post the screen shots on your blog? :D
March 5, 2006 @ 06:53PM
They're for private use :-)
