Netflix vs Blockbuster

Netflix vs Blockbuster

Netflix or Blockbuster OnlineShortly after Minnietaur and I got into a discussion about online video rentals I decided that going online to rent DVDs wasn’t for me. And then, as per usual, the Universe changed itself majorly in my favor so that I’d be a fool not to leap at it’s latest genuflecting in my general direction.

Both Netflix and Blockbuster Online are now offering free one-month trials. More than tempting but which one would I prefer? Both have the unlimited rental 3-at-one-time offers for $17.95+ tax a month ($20) after the trial period. Both have HUGE libraries of DVDs. However, Blockbuster has what appears to be an even better deal. Electronic coupons for its members that you print out for an extra 52 free DVD rentals a year from its Blockbuster video stores (1 per week.) Sweet!

So which one should I try? Well, since both are offering a month of free rentals, I decided to sign up with both Netflix and Blockbuster Online. After I see the differences between the two I will post a comparison here after the trial periods are over and let you know which service gets my hard earned dough and why, if any.

Is anyone here renting from Netflix, Blockbuster Online or other mail-in DVD rental companies? What are your experiences with these services? Like ‘em? Left ‘em? Enquiring minds want to know…

My fiance and I have been with Netflix almost 4 years. The service has gotten better in that time. There is now a mail center in our town so if I mail out a movie it is logged as returned early the next morning and we have a new movie the next day. It went from a 4 day turn around to 1 day.

Plus, I don't have to travel into a part of town where I always feel like I'm going to get car-jacked or shot, just to rent a video. Not getting shot is a big positive in my book. :)

Vinnie,

I don't rent dvds, since most of the good movies are cheap enough to BUY. Try it sometime, no late fees or wondering if you sent the rental dvd back in to the place. Or maybe it's the small town I live in, you don't have to worry about a high crime rate here (yet!), unless you are a politician who has committed a crime or misdemeanor. You asked my input Vinnie.

I use Netflix. Have for years. Fast, reliable.
My experience with Blockbuster makes me think their people are Best Buy wannabes

Anthony: Thanks for the info! Me, I'm actually looking forward to checking out both services and comparing them and with free one-month trials, at no cost to me. I hope to also write a comprehensive fun article on my experiences which I think will entertain as well as inform using my own special blend of something people call 'humor'. :)

Shannon: Hey bro! I both buy and rent DVDs and have amassed quite an owned collection. However, most movies I haven't watched more than once of twice so it's cost is higher to own than to rent twice. While the cost of DVDs have come down, or at least do in a few months usually nontheless it's quite expensive in the long run. Especially since movie studios can make a profit by selling DVDs for $1.50. What I'm looking to do is supply my video watching habit at a lower cost by only owning movies I want to see a LOT. I think it's going to be an interesting experiment. .. hehehe...

Gweep: Since there's more Blockbusters than 7-11's (spooky) and they offer 52 free rentals at their stores per year IF they have about the same turnaround time as Netflix they may be a better deal. Maybe. It'll be fun to find out.

Why rent when you can pirate..LOL!!! I'm paying for my internet connection anyway. You silly people just getting caught up in the man's web of greed. You pay $9 to see it at the theater and then another $5 to rent it and then another $15-20 to buy it if you like it. And all so Tom Cruise can get paid, make enough money no cares he's a freak believing in alien infestations and warp poor Katie Holmes into having his alien love child.

All that is a joke, of course. Well except the Tom Cruise part.. :)

Timbo,Tom Cruise is a joke. They made fun of his Oprah appearance on Scary Movie 4. Vinnie, Glad to hear that you own the movies that you want to watch. Me, I'm waiting for when Star Wars movies 1-3 are in a retail box with extras. Oh well, I can dream can't I?

It ain't the new stuff you should look for. It's the back list

Timbo: Nice parrot! Tom Cruise isn't a joke even though we want him to be. If he was dirt poor holding a cardboard sign and acting the way he does, then he's hysterical!

Shannon: I have a list of movies I haven't watched, as well as some new ones (DOOM is coming in the mail YAY, can't wait to see bad sci-fi. I LUV bad Sci-Fi!)

Gweep: I'm doing a mix, newer stuff I haven't seen or want to see again and older stuff; the harder to find gold.

And with 6 DVDs coming at a time (3 from Netflix, 3 from Blockbuster) I'm gonna have some free fuuun. I'm going to definitely see who has more of what I want and is faster getting it to me. Will be mucho enlightening to see what happens.
