Happy 4th of July!

Today is the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day. A day in which after an alien attack, mankind rallied forth and thanks to a courageous Randy Quaid and his cropduster, defeated the E.T. invaders and saved the world. Although the true meaning behind the 4th of July has been lost thanks to this 1996 blockbuster, nevertheless we’d all like to thank the brave men and women actors who portrayed characters that sacrificed themselves so that we, the audience, could remain free. Free from alien invaders who would decimate the Earth’s population in order to exploit our natural resources. Thank you. Thank you actors and actresses for your efforts to entertain us and make this one day of the year special. Thank you for your selfless acts on our behalf. Your courageous and noble efforts will never be forgotten. Your names will forever be etched in our hearts, as the credits roll. And although most of you were not top-billed or A-listers you touched all our hearts. You shall not be forgotten. Thank you. Thank you, Lisa Star (woman on roof), thank you Wayne Wilderson (AREA 51 technician), thanks be to you, Jessika Cardinahl (German Video Newscaster) whose scenes were deleted and praise be unto you, Volker Engel (Man in Office) whose roles was not credited.

Though you were doing your solemn duty, as actors, nevertheless your scripted sacrifices were not in vain. You made us all feel like we knew you; as friends, as neighbors, as family. You will be remembered as the on-screen heroes that you are. Always.

Happy Independence Day, everyone! Happy 4th of July!

Decimate is incorrect. It means to kill 1 in 10. Correct it

You have the trailer trash dictionary version. Next time spend more than a used chicken on your reference books.

Decimate.

My definition is due to a proper education. Not Classics Illustrated and Cliff Notes

Hey I attended a school where the grades were in 5 rooms. I was in 6th grade, with a bunch of 5th graders in one room. And yes, we did get whupped with a paddle with a few holes in it. And no, parents encouraged the school officials to spank us if we got out of line. And yes, we had electricity, but no computers, just slide rules, multiplication tables and english books.

To decimate means not only to kill, but to eliminate any opposition, ie via politicial or physical means. Ergo the characters in Indepence Day decimated their enemies by sheer physical force.

If dictionary.com doesn't help define that word, then we are all in a world of hurt. :)

The beauty of language is its evolution over time; an ever-changing and fluid beast filled with surprises and unimaginable wonders. Who amongst ye still uses ye, thee or thou and spells out shop as shoppe? Remember when ain't wasn't a word and then the last laugh went to the users as it became one?

I was a product of a school system that didn't have 35 kids in a class and when I went to catholic school for the wildest years of my life (7th-8th grade) the classrooms had a 2yrs combined classes in each room (grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8). And there were nuns. No rulers, no locked in closet kids, no smack knuckles but these were Iron Nuns. Made of steel. Built to last nuns. And one in particular in 1 1/2yrs shaped a wildly chaotic unsuspecting kid in ways I didn't comprehend until many years later... thank you Sister Dorothea - you have my eternal thanks for a job well done.

With that said, onto the seal clubbing! *whack* *whack* *whack* arf!arf!arf! rrrriiiipppppp!

You were a product of a school system? Which one so I can avoid it

Chris,

My school system taught the three Rs, 'Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic. As for today's school system, add social geography, world history, etc. Now Vinnie's school system may've taught something similar, but I don't know. And you have something in school that wasn't added into my school system until I was a Junior in High School, Study Hall.

Be thankful that my generation went through school and opened the doors for your Ipods, Xbox 360s, etc. by building and programming them. Yes, I'm 44, but I never joined the Technology group of my generation. Just now getting back into my first love, music (playing and singing music).

Back in our day our only toy was a stick and when we played Cowboys and Indians... it was with real indians. Whippersnappers.

Vinnie,

Sorry for sounding like an old fogie everyone, but when education is mentioned, I have to jump on my soapbox and rant. Yes Vinnie I did have snow too, but I didn't walk back and forth to school in it, or the rain either. I did what all local kids did, rode the school bus.

The only time I walked home from school is when I missed the school bus (which wasn't very often). But that was a long time ago. Now as for Independence Day, that was a great movie. The aliens should've seen the old b&w movies, then they would've know that the Americans would kick their collective *** back to whatever planet they came from. :D

I always hated the bus until I was old enough to knock a few heads together. Independence Day was one of those movies that you can watch over and over, you know like the 1951 The Thing from Another World - what a classic... not to mention the cool moden version - John Carpenter's The Thing. Also a goodie...

And kids, remember to make sure the box has no soap still in it or it will make your footing slippery.

The history behind the soapbox is interesting. It used to be a wooden box that contained soap flakes, and once empty, people would stand on it and vent their frustrations to a cruel world. Vinnie why is my brain stuffed with useless information? As for Chris, learn as much as you can from school, you may start the next company that will buy out Apple or Microsoft.
July 10, 2006 @ 06:22PM
Nono, your brain is stuffed with useFUL information. Others are filled with ricotta cheese and some are filled with zuccini and lentils. Feh. Go useful info!

Anyone like the patriotic banner revamp? Hmmm?

Good patriotic banner Vinnie. Now for the book, it will be a while. And for your web designing skills, you should think of doing this for a living Vinnie. At least Gweeptish couldn't point at you and laugh. :D

Glad people like the patriotic version. I'll leave it up for a little while then burn it like they say you need to do to retire flags. I've done some webdesign in the past and I do take great delight in making subtle changes to my site, as well as the future additions coming whenever I feel like it as I feel like it. It's fun.

As to gweep laughing and pointing, the pull my finger gag never gets old with him.
