Into the Blogosphere: Day 19

Thunderbird is stupidEveryone who is anyone knows that Thunderbird 2.0 just came out today except it seems, Thunderbird itself. Ya see, it appears the creators didn’t inform it’s own creation of its replacement, via it’s supposedly helpful Check for Updates feature… which as you can see here doesn’t work. Maybe they wished to save their creation from knowing it’s been replaced by a younger, more prettier, Thunderbird? Hmmm…

Any-hoo, you have to give the nice Mozilla folks a tip of the hat in releasing a stable, well-tested minor version (masquerading as a major update just like they did with Firefox 2), a mere 3 weeks after relesing their RC1 beta version. The quick release of Thunderbird 2.0 final to the masses might account for their support forums exploding with users who are experiencing a ton of problems after they upgraded to Thunderbird 2. Which they had to do manually instead of telling their older versions of Thunderbird to update, using it’s own built-in update feature. Which wasn’t working. Which is usually a good sign NOT to update the software, geniuses.

*sigh* Oh well… I’ll update later, thanks - as my Thunderbird (v 1.5.0.10) works just fine and so do all it’s extensions. While I love the folks at Mozilla, they’re famous for making just about everything written for one version of Firefox or Thunderbird to suddenly not be compatible with the next version even if it’s a minor release. Forcing extension, plugin and theme developers to constantly redo their work almost every upgrade. Which causes developers to stop developing and abandoning their creations after time due to the stupidity of it all.

Genius. Sheer genius, peeps. Way to go, Mozilla!

I choose to disbelieve there is a new Thunderbird version since mine insists there are no updates available. Hoax averted!

Ok! Now as for Thunderbird, I hate it. The last version that I had was so buggy I dumped it and went back to OE. Now back to your regularly sponsored

UPDATE: after posing the question amidst the chaos of frantic upgraders of Thunderbird 2 who are experiencing massive problems with the software, no answer is forthcoming as to why Thunderbird won't see let alone upgrade itself... which seems to be a GOOD thing at this time.

FURTHER UPDATE: apparently, according to a moderator at their support forums, it's perfectly normal to have software not recognize there are updates to it after announcing to everyone but the software that there is. Then when morons download the thing and have problems they'll fix it and then put it on the auto-update servers. Riiiighhhhtt... perfectly normal. For idiots.
