I'm a Computer Geek

I'm a Computer Geek

I'm a computer expertThe minute I was exposed to my first personal computer in high school, I became a computer geek. Gone were the dreams of archeology, oceanography and mad scientist/freehand artist. I’ve been a computer geek for the majority of my life… and I’m damned good at it.

Whenever someone who knows of me has a computer question, they ask me. In a weeks time I can get calls from acquaintances, friends, family members, family’s family members and complete strangers. Relatives I haven’t seen in YEARS line their computers up (and their kids’ computers, their friends’ computers etc) when I come around. Recently, when I visited family in NYC I don’t think there was a place I went that I didn’t wind up working on someone’s computer.

Reason: because I’m damned good at it.

It’s my profession, my calling and my hobby.

Whatever company I work for, it doesn’t matter what networking setup they’re running, what computers they have or software they run… I quickly master it. Before too long there’s a line at my desk, as if I was the only support person there, despite being surrounded by colleagues. My multi-tasking abilities are strong, I routinely help people standing in front of me while talking on the phone and remotely helping multiple others as easily and as focused as if I was just helping a single person.

It’s not arrogance, ego or hubris that I state what others have come to know wherever I go. I am a computer geek and I’m damned good at it.

Hardware software or network problems, they’re all the same to me. I can tear apart a computer and rebuild/ repair / upgrade it in my sleep; as well as track down, troubleshoot and fix any and all software or operating system problems your home or work setup can throw at me.

It’s not just my experience and knowledge that keeps people asking for my help; it’s also that I lack the ego and false sense of superiority that’s all too common in my IT colleagues. My sole purpose is to help as many people as fast and as best as I can. That’s my job and my life. I’ve never lost sight of that and never will.

And I’m damned good at it.

(That and I still have my soul.)

I thought I was the only computer geek that could do this. Now I know why I like you Vinnie, we are similar. The world belongs to the computer geeks! :>

You mean tell the difference between a lost file in windows and a deleted file by mistake? Or could it be that you are a bit conceited. I am also a computer geek. Diagnosing computers comes naturally to me. However I don't try to sleep with my computer like some geeks I know do. :>>

Deepblue,

I do have a laptop. Boy does that thing hurt my lap after a while. Seriously, what's the big deal. I sometimes dream of building the ultimate computer. Why I don't know. :>>

deep/chris: I've been working on computers since I was 16 years old and it shows. I also have a great work ethic, which most of my colleagues over the years lacked. Yet I still talk English instead of computer-eze and have exceptional customer service skills; 2 things most IT workers don't have. It's worked for me so no point in changing ;)

Shannon: put the laptop on vibrate (deep bass with a mp3 playing) for happy ending :>>

Vinnie.. you OK. You don't have torn a labrum or rotator cuff do you? B) Sounds like someone is feeling under appreciated. Only those that can work well with the internal customers ever get ahead.

We're all computer geeks. Just some more than others. After dealing with a 1000+ servers all day, sadly I go home and hardly get on one. Such the shame that my hobby and fun has turned into that.

Hey Timbo! No, all is fine and dandy over here. I'm very much appreciated!! I just totally don't get incompetent IT workers, or workers that go about their day like they're better than the people they support or are offended if asked to do their jobs. Thankfully I haven't seen those type of people lately.

The post was an affirmation of who I am in resolute, strong tones. The dancing llamas were busy and the jugglers got sauced the night before.

I am a geek and I'm damned good at it. Boo-ya!

A quick side note: yesterday I helped my brother install and set up his wireless network. He hadn't even looked at the manual and thought it a good idea to call me instead of reading.

Now people know why I really don't mention I have a brother? >:XX

lol Vin's Bro. Now Vinnie, you see why your brother calls you. All my dad knows is to turn on the pc and check his email and shop on Ebay. :D So I have to get him going at home and at his office (He's a GP Doctor, don't know what that is, Google it). His patients will miss him if he has to give up his practice one day. Now as for me, I'm not worried. I expect my dad to keep on working until they pry the stethoscope from his cold, dead hands. Now dance  dance!

A.) My brother is not a real man. He is married. Whipped. Yap yap no teeth.
B.) He can read but if it's not just pictures he gets bored.
C.) He just got a Canon Pixma All-In-One Printer/Scanner for $49 at Office Depot on clearance.
D.) Either he remember my freaking number or he hits redial. ARGH!
E.) I just saved money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

Had to reload Windows Vista yesterday. :( What a joy that was. Now everything is working ok. Anyone else have these problems or it just me? :D
October 2, 2007 @ 01:27AM
Ah, did you make that recovery CD Vista Ultimate lets you or did you do it from scratch. Either way, a joy (Vista does install a bit quicker than XP)

Vinnie, didn't make a recover cd for Vista Ultimate. Soooo, I did it from scratch. Either way, was easier to do. Now it is runing quicker than before, go figure. :D

As long as you just let it sit there it will be as fast as the day you clean-installed it :>>
