Like the stereotypical computer geek, I was weaned on a steady diet of science-fiction television as a kid. I was mainly raised on Star Trek and Doctor Who (with Tom Baker). Shows like Flash Gordon, Space 1999, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Battlestar Galactica (you know, the first one where Apollo was a dude), The Six Million Dollar Man / Bionic Woman, Planet of the Apes, Salvage I; all had influences in my tiny growing noggin but the two dearest to my heart were Star Trek and Doctor Who.
Sci-Fi was much preferable than mother’s milk to me for several reasons that I won’t go into. *shudder* Moving hastily along…
Star Trek was an American-made show but Doctor Who was something very, very different. An extremely fascinating British sci-fi program, MY Doctor - Tom Baker was a silly huge gentle giant with a wierd but cool accent, who ate jelly beans–er jelly babies, wore a an iconic pre-Hogwarts scarf, funny hat, and ran around with a girl pal fighting monsters. A girl? Girls were *yucky*, what little boy would watch a show with a girl in it? Girls had cooties! *ugh*
Doctor Who and his loyal companion Sarah Jane rocked my little world and along with Star Trek shaped my budding imagination and interest in all things tech (and cootie-ridden).
Many, many, *sigh* many years later there was no more Star Trek and Doctor Who stopped broadcasting for 17 years until it was recently rebooted, modernized and to some extent reinvented as well as re-invigorated. (Girls unfortunately still had cooties but other wonderful uses. Like cooking stuff.)
I had heard about the return of my beloved series and childhood companion and recorded the broadcasts here when they aired the first season in the USA in 2005 but just transferred the recordings off my digital recorder (DVR) to DVD unwatched.
I loved the old series so much and was disappointed with all the endless rumors over the many years that they were bringing the show back, only to have all my hopes dashed endlessly over and over. Especially with the 1996 Doctor Who movie that tried to spur a US-produced Doctor Who series. And failed. It sucked. Not sucked sucked but ssuuuuuucccckkkkeeddd!
So as the Doctor came back in 2005 I did not watch, not trusting how it’s new custodians were handling such a beloved show and childhood memories that meant so much to me.
Until last year, 2009, that is. I had just watched the BBC show Primeval Season 1 & 2 on DVD through Netflix and was enjoying it so I watched the last and final season on BBC America. It was then, during a Primeval marathon that they aired a promo for a series I hadn’t heard about called Torchwood.
I LUV LUV LUV british sci-fi shows and after watching the Children of the Earth promo (it was super-cool) I decided to rent Torchwood from Netflix and watch the series from the very beginning. And boy was I happy I did!
It was beyond fascinating. Beyond bloody brilliant and was, as the over-the-ponders there say absolutely gobsmacking. And pretty adult. Truly grown-up sci-fi filled with aliens. It was sexy. Dark. There was sex. Sex with humans. Sex with aliens. Sex with humans and aliens. Did I mention sex? Episode freaking 2 had a gas sex monster that fed off of orgasmic energy! Did I mention there was sex? Sorry, where was I?
Oh, and they had crossover characters from the rebooted Doctor Who as well as references to things that happened in Torchwood that took place in the Doctor Who series. So to fully understand what they were talking about and see Capt. Jack Harkness‘ introduction, I had to swallow my fears and watch the new Doctor Who.
I was comforted a little when I found out that the man who created the new Doctor Who (Russell T. Davies) also created Torchwood. The very man that was successful for resurrecting and reviving the Doctor was a fellow fan of the old show and was as in love with all the characters and spirit of the show as I was! So I reasoned that if I loved Torchwood so much, there was a good chance I’d love Doctor Who.
So I watched. AND I BEYOND LOVED IT! Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed Doctor Who again after all these years (as well as Torchwood). I got my friends into both series and they love me even more for turning them onto these 2 great shows. We’ve geeked out many, many hours talking about the shows and all in true wasteful geek fashion.
Sadly though we’ve run out of new Torchwood and the new Doctor Who episodes (and Dr. Who movies) and are a little bereft.
We were happy to hear that Russell “T is for Tardis” Davies, the man behind Doctor Who’s rebirth and Torchwood recently moved over here to the United States but bitter-sweetly wondered - what will become of the two shows we love now that he’s here?
Thanks to this wonderful article here, we know now.
TORCHWOOD and DOCTOR WHO may be coming over here in the States!!!
Holy freaking Darlek, Batman! Win-win for Geek TV? Who knows but I’m willing to tune in, this time from the beginning and find out! Will you?
Go Russell T. Davies, go!
