How a Geek Goes to the Movies

Like most people I go to a movie theater to see the latest flicks that come out, if I deem them worthy of seeing. I have three categories for movies: (1) must see in the theater (2) won’t lose anything watching it at home and (3) this could really, really suck but I have to get out of here before I kill again. What? Like your criteria is any different? Shut up or I’ll brain you with an unclaimed ox.

Any-whoo going to see a movie is a tad more complex if you’re a geek so I’ve come up with this simple formula I NEVER stray from whenever I go to see a movie:

How a Geek Plans On Going to the Movies title=
Solve this equation and you’ll see how this geek plans on going to the movies.

First, I get in my car and head towards my favorite movie theater, the only theater I deem worthy to go to. Then, being that I wear glasses, I stop at Wal-Mart which is right around the corner from the theater. I absolutely cannot stand specks and dots from dirty glasses while watching movies and I stop by their Vision Center and the nice people clean my glasses for me. The minute I found out they do this for you, I make sure I stop by right before a movie because they can get your glasses much cleaner than I can in seconds. I think they have a machine; man would I love to have one of those! I HATE cleaning my glasses!

I then get back in my car and go to the movies all happy and with a shiny pair of clean glasses. I tried that with my car and their Auto Center but alas, no go.

If I was really peckish when I stopped by Walmart I get a sub ($2.99) and some iced tea (69 cents) and eat it in the theater parking lot. Once I pay for my movie, usually with a free coupon I head inside smuggling in some Twizzlers or other candy. I then make sure to ask for 2 courtesy cups of ice water at the concessions counter and take my seat. Simple yet geeky eh? Especially that getting your glasses cleaned bit, bet that’s a new one for you guys, eh?

So… how do you plan your movie going, fellow geeks?

I wait for the dvd release. You waste too much money at the movie theather for popcorn and coca-cola, plus the whoppers, etc. Get the dvd release and you can have all of your snacks at home.

Helena: I'm not buttski retentive but I do like things the way I like it. In all the years I've worn glasses I HATE cleaning them. Someone should invent a kind of lens that repels dust and other specks of dander/whatever. They'd make a friggin fortune!

Shannon: If I had a 30 foot movie theater at home with a $200,000 sound system I might never go out of my house! Some movies you just can't get the same feel and have to be enjoyed in the theater. That doesn't mean you should but their overpriced crap, I never do. And when I see a movie I got to a matinee, bring my own snacks and get a courtesy cup of ice water. So $7 to do that ain't bad. The movies I don't care to see in the theaters I watch at home thanks to Netflix (even though they piss me off with sucking up to Warner Brothers).

Vinnie,

My LCD is 36 inch widescreen, so I enjoy whatever movie I can. Besides 3D TV is coming (which you predicted), but the 3D tech better be better than crappy glasses to watch 3D movies on. Oh, and if I had the dough, my LCD would be 72 inches with a 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound stereo system and a Blu-Ray DVD Player (until they make 3D Blu-Ray).

I'd buy a multiplex movie theater myself and fit it in a small corner of my mansion. Locals would be invited to see the movies free of charge as well as better concessions all gratis. This way the local movie companies would all go out of business or learn to offer consumers a better experience for less dough!

Oooooh and don't forget my movie theater in no way would have a positive effect at the box office either! Win-win!
